Heviz Hungary

Our apartment is the only apartment upstairs with a balcony overlooking the front. We are very secluded in the tree tops with roof top views. All the other apartments share terraces and balconies overlooking the garden at the rear. We are very pleased as our seclusion means I can sit writing this blog in my, PJ`s with my breakfast or a glass of wine in perfect privacy. We have a big open plan kitchen living room, a huge comfortable bedroom and a nice spacious shower room. We get sun in the morning and shade in the evening which is lovely after a hot day exploring.

A very short walk to the end of the street brings us to two restaurants and a coop supermarket for those essential bottles of wine. It is so much cheaper than Budapest! A very good bottle of Hungarian wine costs aout 800-1000 HUFs. £2.50. I now know why Debbie Aldridge from The Archers is reluctant to go back to Ambridge!!! :-) We also found a much more pleasant walk back down the hill into the main town. It is quite a hill, but taken carefully and walking on the shady side it is ok. Tourist information is fabulous, really helpfull with good English. I would say that Heviz trourist information is the best so far. They even printed off my travel insurance claims forms for me, no charge! Couldn`t have been more helpful. Talking of English, I think we are the only ones here. It appears to be a mecca for Germans coming to bathe in the thermal lake. The town is pretty but caters for the tourists. Plus side is lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. Cakes everywhere! The German do love a cake. In fact, cake for breafast, lunch and dinner washed down with beer, coffee and an icecream chaser! (Quite often all at the same time)

We bought two woggles and headed off to the Thermal Lake. It is the largest thermal lake in the world and ranges between 2 and 38 metres deep. In the depths of winter is never goes below 22 degrees c, and in summer reaches 38. Lotus flowers drift along and ducks paddle about amongst the bathers. It is a marvel of organisation. You pay at the kiosk, according to what services you require. You are issued with a watch strap device, which allocates you a locker etc. You can just bathe in the lake, or you can use the sauna, steam room, get various massages and treatments. We opt for a 3 hour lake bathing session. Obviously we would be like prunes after 3 hours in the water, but the 3 hours includes sun bathing on the terraces and buying refreshments. It is a blissful experience. We loved it so much we went back three times. I am a good swimmer, Norman doesnt swim at all. (Always amazes me that he is happy out of his depth!) Glad I bought a woggle too, it prevented me from trying to swim and use my ankle, we just `bobbed`. Every so often Norman would hang onto my good ankle, I would do breast stroke and he would kick. A good bit of teamwork. I didnt take my camera with me (too risky) so will dowload some stock photos. Apologies for that.
