Ioaninna

Our taxi takes us to the Hotel Dioni. We have booked a hotel rather than an apartment here because we knew we would be arriving in the early hours of the morning. With a 24 hour reception we knew we would be welcomed, and also hotels are easy to find.

We are quickly checked in and shown our room. To be honest, we were tired and travel worn so we barely looked around us, just crawled into bed. In the morning we found it is actually a very nice hotel and in the heart of the old town. Our room is spacious and quiet on the 3rd floor with a view over the roof tops to the mountains beyond.

Ioaninna (pronounced ya-nin-a) is lovely. Situated on the shores of lake ?, the old town is a muddle of cobbled (gggrrrr) street with, little coffee shops and little stores. We are amazed at how many wool shops and hardware stores there are. How many jumpers and lawnmowers can you need in Greece? The walled castle area is very pretty and houses several important buildings.

We had booked 3 nights here as a stop over. Obviously the first night was lost with our late arrival, our bus leaves at 2.30 on the last day so in reality we have one whole day and the morning of the last day. Not long enough! Its a nice little town, I would have liked to spend more time here.
